My favorite family tradition is buying each other an ornament to open on Christmas Eve. It’s especially fun if the ornament captures an event from the year…this year my son went to college so we got him an ornament from his university! Happy Holidays!

My traditions have changed over the years and now that my kids are young adults out on their own, I try and find and create time for me to be creative and have balance in my life and then, setting up times to share with my kids, fitting into their lives so we stay connected. Every moment is a gift.

It’s fun seeing the photos of our houses over the years and gives us a focus on family time instead of presents.

Well, mine and my boyfriend’s anniversary is at the beginning of December so we each get each other an ornament on that day and go pick out our tree. I love the patterns and colours in this table runner! I’m enamoured with Morocco.

My favorite tradition is going to this little Albertan small town named Fort MacLeod. My mother lives there now and they embrace the Christmas spirit big time. Tree lightings, craft shows and the most mazing Santa parade I have ever seen.

Great, colorful blog! Our family of four tries to guess how many Christmas cards we’ll receive each day (in the morning) then we take turns each day opening them after dinner together. Everyone has to be present to open the cards.

  129. Rachel December 12, 2011 at 7:43 pm #

    Beautiful table runner!

Every Christmas I made my daughter a tree ornament. Most are cross-stitched but a couple of years I tried something different. She’s 19 this year and has a whole collection, enough to decorate her own tree if she wanted.

Every year the kids and my husband decorate the tree, and while they do, I make super-yummy homemade mint hot chocolate and bake cookies. Perfect.

What a lovely table runner. Now that we have a son, my husband is continuing the tradition of dad reading ‘The Night Before Christmas’ to him right before bed on Christmas Eve. Turns out our families used the same version of the book when we were kids, and we’re still using one of those now.

My husband and I are celebrating our first Christmas as a married couple this year. We began a new tradition together of buying a fresh Christmas every year at the end of our Thanksgiving weekend. This is my first real tree and it was such an exciting experience picking it out, and getting it home, to finally decorating it with our pretty ornaments! So much fun :)Can’t wait to make more memories!

One of my favorite traditions is to send real Christmas cards. I hand write them and hand address them. Currently I’m only using store bought as my roommate left hundreds of unused Christmas cards when she moved and this year I finally used the last of them. She moved out over 7 years ago!! So next year I hope to hand make my cards instead of relying on store bought cards. Thanks for the great giveaway!

One of the things we do every year is have the kids decorate Gramma and Grampa’s Christmas tree and then bake sugar cookies to bring home. They’ve been doing this since they were so little they had to stand on chairs to reach the counters! Now they’re almost grown and out of the house so it’s been going on a long time, and I hope they do it forever. 🙂

One of my favourite traditions is making fresh, homemade pasta (an homage to our Italian roots).. we traditionally serve it 2 ways: Lasagne (with homemade bolognese, of course!) and as Pasta Piselli e Funghi (Fettuccine with cream, peas, mushroom & parmesan) which is my absolute favourite. For some reason I only make it at Christmas though (even though I make lasagne through the year).

With my girls grown and moved away, we’ve had to leave behind many traditions. One we’ve kept is the burning of the Christmas candle. It’s a white taper with 24 trees painted on it. You burn one tree a night until Christmas Eve. My grandmother painted them first, then my Dad, and now I do it for my grandchildren. I hope they continue the tradition!

A tradition that we had done for over 15 years was to have the grandkids and neighbor kids all over 3 weeks before Christmas to make and decorate Christmas Cookies. It was so much fun. Now they are all too big/old to want to do that any longer.

Our favorite is getting in the car with the kids and driving through the Madison WI, Holiday lights. This is set up in a large park by one of the lakes on the isthmus. The electricians Union pays for all the large wired displays. They take a donation at the end and handout miniature candy canes. Come to Madison it is a great hip metropolitan city. susanasaw@yahoo.com

We started an accidental tradition last year – I made Johnnycake for breakfast and our 2 year old said, “cake – for Jesus’ birthday!” so that’s our new tradition.

I always bake a tin of cookies 2 weeks before Christmas. The idea is to have something to eat on Christmas eve night but it never last that long. Thanks for the giveaway.

Love the colors. My favorite Christmas tradition is getting together with daughters and attending community and church craft fairs, then lunch out and shopping. We usually don’t buy much but it’s a fun day

Our favourite thing to do in the holidays is reading books together next to the tree. It’s a douglas fir and smells so fragrant when the lights are on!
