An Apple a Day Blog Tour, Giveaway and Tutorial!!

Welcome!!!  I am so excited to be the host of the final stop on this tour!!  I hope that you have made it to the other blogs for their great giveaways and tutorials!

The priviledge of working with Amanda, aka the Quilted Fish, and the amazing Design Team leaves me speechless!  On many days, my friendships with these gals has motivated, encouraged and challenged me.  I am such a blessed gal!!

My contribution to this book project….a fast and fun quilt with a scallop border and fun apple appliques!!

Here is another view along with a glimpse of Jana’s quilt – two quilt projects mixed in with seven other projects – score!!

I thought a fun project similar to my quilt with a scallop border would be a great compliment to this tour.  I know scallop borders can be intimidating, so I thought a this project would provide a great way to experiment with a new technique!

So let’s get started….

Supplies

Assorted fat quarters for the inner blocks

½ yard for border, minimum

1 yard for the back

1 fat quarter for bias binding
Cut an assortment of 2.5 inch squares and

4.5 inch squares.  Sew the 2.5 inch squares into 4-patches.

Place blocks in a pleasing arrangement – 5 blocks in each row and 5 rows.  Sew into rows.  Press seams in rows in opposite direction, so row 1 goes to the right and row 2 goes to the left and so on.

5 inch strips for the border.  If you piece your strips you can do with 3 full width of fabric strips, otherwise cut 4 strips.  Layer with batting and back.

I decided to quilt this piece with an off center circle in the middle of the piece.  I love the finished effect!  I did meandering in the border.

Now to prep for the scallop edge, draw your scallop on your quilt.

Bias binding is required with a scallop edge.  Riley Blake has an excellent video tutorial on cutting bias binding!  I highly recommend it!!  I have laid binding strips on top of the centerpiece to make sure I have cut enough strips.

Sew your binding strips together and I like to press my binding before sewing it on.  This picture illustrates how I sew the binding on my piece using my drawn line as my raw edge.

So my binding is all machine sewn on, but you can see I have yet to cut my excess fabric off.  Remember with scallop edge, you have a bias edge that could stretch!

So I have found it best (thanks to a great tip from my BFF!!) to cut just a small section at a time, sew binding down by hand taking very small stitches.

You can see here how I have cut a small section, ready for hand sewing.

From the back, you can see the quilting and the binding.

All finished!  The finished size of this project is about a 29 inch square.  Enjoy!!

Giveaway time….I am offering a copy of the book….

along with a kit to make this amazing necklace!!  Hopefully by now you know my friend Jackie designed this project – yea for Jackie!!  I will draw and announce my winner on Friday, July 13.

Oh and if you would rather purchase the book – click here to buy one!

On behalf of Amanda, Jackie, Jana, Johanna, Julie, Sally, Stephanie and Candice – thanks for joining us on this bloggy book tour!!  Hope you enjoyed the fun projects and entered all the giveaways!!

  54. Sara Wright July 10, 2012 at 8:32 pm #

Wondering how you did the circle quilting- did you use a guide on your machine? I’ve got one but I’ve never used it, I’m embarrassed to say 😉 I usually just do straight quilting with masking tape as a guide or I just meader with my free motion foot. I think the off center circle would be perfect for a small quilt like you made!
