girls in trees tutorial

Today I am thrilled to share with you one of the projects I created for Tamara Kate Design’s Fall Quilt Market booth!  I hope you enjoy today’s tutorial….

My Girls in the trees piece is a fun wall hanging – 11.5 x 25.5 inches.

I fell in love with the girls in the trees and thought a fun wall hanging would be a perfect project.

I began by fussy cutting different girls.  Notice that I added ¼ inch so that when I sewed the pieces together I wouldn’t lose part of the trees.
I placed several in possible layout.
Sew 1.5 inch strips into units
I actually cut down the strips to 1.25 to 1 inch to keep with the size of the girls in trees blocks.  Since I don’t like sewing with smaller strips, I started with two 1.5 inch strips and then cut them down after sewing them together
I just kept building and adding strip set, changing the direction, and even adding more fussy cut pieces to fill out the size I desired.
I sewed this piece together in rows.  In this picture you can see how I have sewn this row together.
Here is my completed top ready to be trimmed and quilted.
After I sandwiched the top with batting and backing fabric from this line, I am ready to quilt.  I used a simmer rayon thread and did free motion quilting to hopefully look like wind blowing gently in the trees.  I really love how this piece finished!
Here is another view….just needs some binding.
This picture shows the back and the binding fabric I selected.
Another look at the finished front.  Thanks once again to Tamara Kate Design – such fun fabrics to play with!  Happy Sewing!

Do you sell a kit for the pieces needed for the top? I confess, I’m not prob going to hunt down all of these fabrics, butwould love a kit, and could use my own backing fabric already in my stash.
    Thanks,
    Kate
