binding tips part 2 + giveaway

hello Monday!

today…we are going to continue with our binding tips series…

you can read last week’s post here

binding tips part 1

last week I left you here…sewing binding on a smaller piece…

after I have sewed the binding on all around…I stop about a thumb width from the other end…and then trim off any excess…

and then I tuck the end inside the beginning…and finish stitching it…overlapping with the beginning stitching…

the next step is the handwork…I do enjoy this step…and usually do handwork when waiting for my kids or watching some TV, which isn’t too often…

as I get ready to hand sew, I place the folded edge of the binding even with the stitching from sewing the binding on…so I don’t pull my binding in snug…I like the rounded edge…

here you can see how the piece is coming along…

I really love how this finishes…

next time we will talk about how I finish larger pieces…

and the giveaway for today….

spy anything fun??

leave a comment to enter…

I will announce a winner on Friday…

Happy Sewing!

I enjoy hand stitching the binding too… I just know that I’d make a mess if I machine stitched it! I love that fabric on the back!

If I’m going to watch TV in the evening I love to have some binding to stitch down, makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something! Cute scraps, love the little pink bird!

This is the part I was wondering about, if you hand sewed it. My wife does that too. Trying to machine sew the binding never works out quite the same on front and back. Nice quilt!

Would you say your bindings are “filled”? I have one quilt that I didn’t fill the binding and it wore out faster than the others. I blamed in on the fact it was flannel. Any ideas?

I haven’t tried joining the binding that way. I watched a quilting show today with a binding technique I’ve never seen before. So now I have two new methods to try.

This is how I have been finishing quilts for years until the last quilt I did. It was flannel and I wasn’t sure I wanted the bulk.

    Please, count me in too!

I always use my machine for binding. Hand stitching looks best but I cant hardly handle a needle anymore. My hands lock up. Thank you for the linky party.

Thanks for the binding tips Brooke. I am currently hand binding a sampler quilt and have been struggling at getting the perfectly mitered corners I am looking for. Almost always have a corner of the four where it just doesn’t like fold so flat on the back side. I do machine bind my utility quilts and placemats (those items that get more wear and tear, and endure 10yrold rough housing with the dog) and leave the hand binding for all the others.
