flora centerpiece + giveaway

flora
hello and welcome!
if this is your first time here, I hope to see you back from time to time and if you stop here often, you are in for a treat!
today I am excited to share with you my centerpiece using Flora by Kelly Ventura Designs for Windham Fabrics!
flora
this line contains some great possibilities with the solids, the smaller prints and the large floral in several colorways!
flora
my centerpiece is made with a fat quarter bundle (which you can win on Windham’s site!)
and a small piece of batting…
let’s get started…
begin by cutting 1.5 and 1.25 inch strips from each of the assorted prints
flora
cut a 6 inch square from each of the solids
from one of the main florals, cut two 6 inch strips and sub-cut into 6 inch squares
cut four 1.25 inch inner border strips
cut a 3.5 inch strip from another of the main floral prints and sub-cut into 3.5 inch squares for the four corner posts
cut six 2.5 inch strips of a floral for the outside border
cut seven 2.5 inch strips for binding from one of the prints
flora
piecing the centerpiece
begin with a solid square and one of your strips, with right sides together, sew 1/4 inch from one side
flora
trim off the excess square, as shown in the above photo
flora
press the seam, sew another strip and repeat again until you have a 6 inch square
trim off the excess pieced unit as seen in the photo above

repeat for each of the other solid squares. I did one of each color

tip – as you are sewing with pieced squares to the print squares, realize you are working with bias edges and they will stretch a bit if you are not careful
flora
with the remaining strips, sew them together into units that measure a minimum of 3.5 inches wide and then sub-cut into 3.5 inch squares
flora
now you are ready to arrange your center unit and sew it together
flora
sew a narrow 1.25 inch border around the center piece
begin sewing the 3.5 inch pieced blocks into rows, alternating the direction
flora
I used 3.5 inch squares of the light floral print for the corner posts
sew the pieced border on two sides – opposite from each other
sew a post (floral print) to one end of another pieced border row
flora
sew that row on until just about to the end
remove from the sewing machine and place on the cutting table and measure where to trim and sew on the other corner post
finish sewing the border on
repeat for the other side
flora
your centerpiece should look like this
I did trim to make sure all was even before proceeding to add the outer 2.5 inch border
flora
with the outer border on, you are ready to piece the back using four of the fat quarters and begin quilting
flora
I opted to do a large off center circle using my walking foot
flora
sew binding pieces together…I used one of the prints…I cut seven 2.5 inch strips
hand sew or machine sew down the binding…
flora
the centerpiece finishes at about 28 inches square

thanks so much for reading along!
